Insides from the National Patient Day 2025
03/07/2025Last week, Promptly Health proudly sponsored the National Patient Day, organised by Use My Data —a UK association created by patients, for patients.
Held in Leeds, the event brought together key stakeholders together across the community - from patients and carers to academics, researchers and NHS staff to encourage conversation across the 3 core principles, upon which Use My Data was founded 10 years ago:
Patients should have access to their own health records.
Patient data should be used to improve NHS care.
Patient data should be used to support research and innovation.
🗣️ Trust was the central theme.
An opening theme of the day was Trust, including Nicola Byrne highlighting that, as National Data Guardian, her role isn't just about protecting data, it's about making data work harder to provide the best care - something that the whole community can see value in. Ming Tang of NHS England also touched on the role of the new Health Data Research Service and plans for the Single Patient Record, and the importance public engagement has had in shaping these developments.
Trust continued as a conversation topic throughout the day and was described as "something earned, not assumed". To build on and maintain trust, the community should continue to listen to what the public are telling us:
Being transparent about how data is used
Ensuring data sharing delivers direct benefits to the NHS and patients
Giving patients a voice in how decisions are made
📣 Patient perspectives
Patient panels throughout the day were full of honest, hopeful dialogue. One participant noted that concerns around data use are often fuelled by misleading media narratives, and called on everyone to focus more on success stories and celebrate the positive impact of data done right.
📚 The ABPI unveiled its first-ever case study library, a real positive step in acknowledging the use of patient data and also celebrating the good outcomes achieved in projects across the country.
